Some have called it ‘an identity crisis’. Universities face tough challenges as higher education transitions to meet the demands of student employability. Debate rages about the purpose and value of taking the degree path. Students and their parents scrutinise the experience and outcomes ever more closely given the model of student debt. What does that mean for a university careers service?
For Learning to Leap’s latest podcast, I caught up with Claire Aydogan, appointed a year ago as Head of Careers at Leeds Beckett University. With a cross-sector background in call centre management, HR business partnering, outplacement and careers consultancy, Claire brings strong customer service, learning and organisational development experience. She is making an immediate impact as her team adopts and adapts to new concepts and practices in the digital age. They won a prestigious internal award this year from the Students’ Union and Centre for Learning and Teaching.

What’s your experience of how university careers services are responding today to students’ needs? What’s going well? What could be different?
An absolutely brilliant interview with questions and answers of interest to both current and recent students. University Careers Services can help students in ways which can be life-changing for them – from a workshop for writing an attractive LinkedIn profile to networking with a future employer and much more. As Claire points out, Leeds Beckett University’s Careers Service is also available for students up to 5 years after they graduate. A highly recommended free service for current students and alumni alike … and a highly recommended interview.
Claire was an excellent interviewee so made my role much easier! Thanks for your kind and helpful comments, Dawn.
